Q: What are antioxidants?
A: View answerAntioxidants are small molecules that play a key role in defending the body against damage from free radicals, substances that are formed in the body through the natural metabolic process of oxidation. The body's exposure to free radicals can be increased by exposure to certain environmental factors, such as cigarette smoke, air pollution, and ultraviolet light. The body naturally uses antioxidants to help protect against free radicals, which can cause damage to DNA, proteins, cells, and tissues.
Q: Are SPLENDA® ESSENTIALS™ No Calorie Sweetener Products suitable for my patients with diabetes?
A: View answerYes, all SPLENDA® No Calorie Sweetener Products are suitable for people with diabetes. Sucralose, the no-calorie sweetening ingredient in all SPLENDA® ESSENTIALS™ No Calorie Sweetener Products, is not a carbohydrate and has been shown in studies to have no effect on blood glucose control or insulin levels.
Like other no-calorie sweeteners on the market, SPLENDA® ESSENTIALS™ No Calorie Sweetener with Antioxidants and B Vitamins products contain small amounts of carbohydrate (less than 1 gram per serving) that provide needed volume and texture. These common food ingredients, which include maltodextrin and dextrose, add so few calories per serving that both products meet the Food and Drug Administration's criteria for no-calorie foods (<5 calories/serving). In a meal plan for patients with diabetes, up to four packets of SPLENDA® ESSENTIALS™ No Calorie Sweetener with Antioxidants or with B Vitamins products are considered a "free food." The American Dietetic Association and the American Diabetes Association consider a free food to be any food or beverage that contains less than 20 calories and 5 grams or less of carbohydrate per serving.
SPLENDA® ESSENTIALS™ No Calorie Sweetener, 1 gram of Fiber contains soluble fiber. The addition of fiber helps provide important texture and volume and like other ingredients added to usual no-calorie sweeteners sold on the market, adds a small amount of calories per serving. The amount of calories per serving in SPLENDA® ESSENTIALS™ No Calorie Sweetener, 1 gram of Fiber meets FDA standards for a no-calorie food. Soluble fiber is also metabolized by the body and therefore needs to be accounted for in a diabetic diet. Up to three packets of SPLENDA® ESSENTIALS™ No Calorie Sweetener, 1 gram of Fiber count as a "free food" in a diet for diabetes. If a patient with diabetes chooses to consume more than three packets in one sitting, he or she will need to count the carbohydrates in those packets.
Q: Can SPLENDA® ESSENTIALS™ No Calorie Sweetener Products be used by children?
A: View answerYes, SPLENDA® Brand Sweetener (sucralose), the sweetening ingredient in SPLENDA® ESSENTIALS™ No Calorie Sweetener Products, can be used by everyone, including children. However, the daily dietary fiber, vitamin, and caloric needs of children differ from adults. A child's diet should be adjusted to meet his or her individual needs.
Q: Can my patients use as SPLENDA® ESSENTIALS™ No Calorie Sweetener Products if they already take a complete multivitamin?
A: View answerSPLENDA® ESSENTIALS™ No Calorie Sweetener Products are safe to use as a replacement for sugar, including if one is taking a complete multivitamin supplement. However, since most complete multivitamins contain 100% or more of the Daily Value for vitamins C, E, B1 (thiamin), B5 (pantothenic acid), and B6 (pyridoxine), there is no additional health benefit in using both. Patients who already take a daily multivitamin may benefit from using SPLENDA® ESSENTIALS™ No Calorie Sweetener, 1 gram of Fiber, which can help increase daily fiber intake.
Q: Can my patients cook and bake with SPLENDA® ESSENTIALS™ No Calorie Sweetener with B Vitamins or Antioxidants?
A: View answerWhile these products were not specifically developed for cooking and baking, sucralose, the sweetening ingredient in all SPLENDA® Sweetener Products, retains its sweetness at high temperatures. There would be some loss in the potency of the vitamins contained in SPLENDA® ESSENTIALS™ No Calorie Sweetener with B Vitamins or Antioxidants during the heat exposure associated with cooking and baking. However, these losses are equivalent to those that would occur when cooking or baking foods that naturally contain these vitamins.
Q: How much do SPLENDA® ESSENTIALS™ No Calorie Sweetener Products cost?
A: View answerThe suggested retail price of all three SPLENDA® ESSENTIALS™ No Calorie Sweetener Products is $3.99 - 4.99 for an 80-count box of packets, depending on the retailer. The suggested retail price for SPLENDA® ESSENTIALS™ No Calorie Sweetener, 1 gram of Fiber, Granulated is about $4.75 for the 1.6 lb box (7.45 oz) and about $7.65 for the 3 lb bag (14 oz). Please note that these prices may vary.
Q: What is the shelf life of SPLENDA® ESSENTIALS™ No Calorie Sweetener with Antioxidants and SPLENDA® ESSENTIALS™ No Calorie Sweetener with B Vitamins?
A: View answerSPLENDA® ESSENTIALS™ No Calorie Sweetener (with Antioxidants or with B Vitamins) has a 12-month shelf life.
Q: Are SPLENDA® ESSENTIALS™ No Calorie Sweetener Products kosher?
A: View answerYes, all SPLENDA® ESSENTIALS™ No Calorie Sweetener Products are certified as Kosher Parve by the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America, Kashruth Division.
SPLENDA® ESSENTIALS™ No Calorie Sweetener Products are not kosher for Passover because several of the ingredients in the products come from corn (dextrose, maltodextrin, and the soluble fiber in the SPLENDA® ESSENTIALS™ No Calorie Sweetener, 1 gram of Fiber).
Q: Will SPLENDA® ESSENTIALS™ No Calorie Sweetener, 1 gram of Fiber cause gastrointestinal (GI) side effects?
A: View answerSPLENDA® ESSENTIALS™ No Calorie Sweetener, 1 gram of Fiber contains 1 gram of soluble fiber per packet or teaspoon. This amount of fiber is not expected to cause GI side effects. The American Heart Association recommends a fiber intake of 25 grams per day. For individuals who find they may be sensitive to fiber intake, we recommend gradually increasing intake to give the body time to adjust.
Q: Are adults in the United States getting enough of the B Vitamins in SPLENDA® ESSENTIALS™ No Calorie Sweetener with B Vitamins (thiamine, pantothenic acid, and pyridoxine)?
A: View answerPatients who are restricting carbohydrates or otherwise eating a diet that is not well balanced may be consuming fewer foods known to be high in the B vitamins that support a healthy metabolism.
Q: Can pregnant women use SPLENDA® ESSENTIALS™ No Calorie Sweetener Products?
A: View answerYes, SPLENDA® Brand Sweetener (sucralose), the sweetening ingredient in SPLENDA® ESSENTIALS™ No Calorie Sweetener Products, can be used by everyone, including pregnant women. However, women who are pregnant are commonly prescribed pre-natal vitamins. When daily vitamin needs are met by taking a pre-natal or regular daily vitamin supplement, or through a well-balanced diet, there is no additional health benefit derived from the vitamins provided in SPLENDA® ESSENTIALS™ No Calorie Sweetener Products.
A better choice may be our SPLENDA® ESSENTIALS™ No Calorie Sweetener, 1 gram of Fiber, as pre-natal vitamins do not contain this important nutrient; and as many pregnant women do not meet their daily fiber needs through diet alone. Additionally, your pregnant patient's Ob/Gyn practitioner or registered dietician is best suited to answer individual questions on how to meet her daily vitamin and fiber needs.
Q: Can lactating women use SPLENDA® ESSENTIALS™ No Calorie Sweetener Products?
A: View answerYes, SPLENDA® Brand Sweetener (sucralose), the sweetening ingredient in SPLENDA® ESSENTIALS™ No Calorie Sweetener Products, can be used by everyone, including lactating women. However, women who are nursing are often prescribed a multivitamin supplement (often the same supplement prescribed for use during pregnancy). If daily vitamin needs are met by taking a pre-natal or regular daily vitamin supplement, or through a well-balanced diet, there is no additional health benefit derived from the vitamins provided in SPLENDA® ESSENTIALS™ No Calorie Sweetener Products.
A better choice may be our SPLENDA® ESSENTIALS™ No Calorie Sweetener, 1 gram of Fiber, as neither pre-natal nor multivitamins contain this important nutrient; and as many women do not meet their daily fiber needs through diet alone. Additionally, your patient's Ob/Gyn practitioner or registered dietician is best suited to answer individual questions on how to meet her daily vitamin and fiber needs.
Q: What if someone takes a daily complete multivitamin or B complex vitamin and also consumes many packets of SPLENDA® ESSENTIALS™ No Calorie Sweetener with B Vitamins or Antioxidants?
A: View answerUsual use, even for those with a sweet tooth, of SPLENDA® ESSENTIALS™ No Calorie Sweetener Products is expected to be safe, even when vitamin intake from other sources meets daily recommended intakes. However, when daily vitamin needs are met by taking a pre-natal or regular daily vitamin supplement, or through a well-balanced diet, there is no additional health benefit derived from the vitamins provided in SPLENDA® ESSENTIALS™ No Calorie Sweetener Products.
A better choice may be SPLENDA® ESSENTIALS™ No Calorie Sweetener, 1 gram of Fiber, because multivitamins do not typically contain this important nutrient, and many individuals are only meeting about half of their daily fiber needs.
Q: Are there limits to the amount of SPLENDA® ESSENTIALS™ No Calorie Sweetener with Antioxidants or B Vitamins that one can consume in a day?
A: View answerUsual use, even for those with a sweet tooth, of SPLENDA® ESSENTIALS™ No Calorie Sweetener Products is expected to be safe, even when vitamin intake from other sources meets daily recommended intakes. However, when daily vitamin needs are met by taking a pre-natal or regular daily vitamin supplement, or through a well-balanced diet, there is no additional health benefit derived from the vitamins provided in SPLENDA® ESSENTIALS™ No Calorie Sweetener Products. Hence, a better no-calorie sweetener choice might be SPLENDA® ESSENTIALS™ No Calorie Sweetener, 1 gram of Fiber, because multivitamins do not typically contain this important nutrient, and many individuals are only meeting about half of their daily fiber needs.
Q: How do vitamins B1 (thiamine), B5 (pantothenic acid), and B6 (pyridoxine) affect metabolism?
A: View answerVitamins B1 (thiamine), B5 (pantothenic acid), and B6 (pyridoxine) support the metabolism of the macronutrients: fat, carbohydrate, and protein, which provide the body with energy.1 The vitamins help release the energy from these important macronutrients. Thiamine functions as a coenzyme in the metabolism of carbohydrates and branched-chain amino acids. Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) functions as a coenzyme in the metabolism of amino acids and glycogen. Pantothenic acid functions as a component of coenzyme A and phosphopantetheine, which are involved in fatty acid metabolism.2
Q: What happens to the integrity of the vitamins in SPLENDA® ESSENTIALS™ No Calorie Sweetener Products when you heat them during cooking or baking?
A: View answerWhile sucralose, the sweetening ingredient in all SPLENDA® Sweetener Products, retains its sweetness in high temperatures, the SPLENDA® ESSENTIALS™ line of products that contain vitamins were not designed for use in cooking and baking. Prolonged exposure to high heat can cause decreases in vitamin potency. However, these potency losses would not be greater than what would normally occur when cooking or baking foods that naturally contain vitamins.
Q: What is the difference between the Daily Values and the Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs)?
A: View answerThere are two sets of nutrient value recommendations used in the US today:
• Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs) are a set of nutrient reference values that are used to help people select healthful diets, set national nutrition policy, and establish safe upper limits of intake. Starting in the mid-1990s, DRIs began to replace Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDAs).
• Daily Values are based on the older nutrition recommendations from 1968. Newer recommendations have since been introduced in the DRIs, but the Daily Values are still required for use with nutrition labeling and are regulated by the FDA.
| Nutrient | Daily Value | Daily Reference Intakes* Males 19 - >70 yrs | Daily Reference Intakes* Females 19 - > 70 yrs |
| Vitamin C | 60 mg | 90 mg | 75 mg |
| Vitamin E | 30 IU | 22.4 IU (15 mg) | 22.4 IU (15 mg) |
| Vitamin B1 | 1.5 mg | 1.2 mg | 1.1 mg |
| Vitamin B5 | 10 mg | 5 mg | 5 mg |
| Vitamin B6 | 2 mg | 1.3-1.7 mg | 1.3-1.5 mg |
| Fiber | 25 g | 30-38 g | 21-25 g |

A: View answerNo. SPLENDA® Brand Sweetener, or sucralose, is suitable for everyone, and the sweet taste can be enjoyed by the whole family, including people with diabetes, children, and women who are pregnant or nursing.
Q: Can pregnant and lactating women use SPLENDA® Brand Sweetener (sucralose)?
A: View answerYes. All FDA-required studies to support the safety of sucralose during pregnancy and nursing have been performed. As a result, the FDA and other important health authorities have concluded that sucralose is suitable for use by everyone, including pregnant and nursing women. SPLENDA® Brand Sweetener may be used as part of a healthy pre-natal and post-natal diet to help reduce excess calories from added sugars.
Q: Can children use SPLENDA® Brand Sweetener (sucralose)?
A: View answerYes. SPLENDA® Brand Sweetener (sucralose) can be used by everyone, including children. SPLENDA® Sweetener Products are a great way for children to reduce the amount of added sugar they eat daily, and may even help young patients eat healthier foods.
Q: Does SPLENDA® Brand Sweetener (sucralose) affect blood glucose levels?
A: View answerNo. Extensive research, including randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trials in persons with diabetes, shows that sucralose has no effect on blood glucose control.1,2
Q: What is the Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) for SPLENDA® Brand Sweetener (sucralose)?
A: View answerThe term Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) is not a threshold for safety. However, regulators set this intake level as a way to help describe safety. It represents a daily intake that, if maintained over a lifetime, is 100 times lower than amounts found to be safe in studies designed to detect potential safety risks. FDA defined an ADI for sucralose of 5 mg/kg body weight. Other important health and regulatory bodies, such as the Joint Expert Committee on Food Additives of the World Health Organization, the European Union's Scientific Committee on Food, and Food Standards Australia/New Zealand have set the ADI for sucralose at 15 mg/kg/day.
Because there are no health risks expected with sucralose use, your patients may consume a variety of products containing SPLENDA® Brand Sweetener (sucralose) to reduce their calorie and carbohydrate intake from sugar without concern that they're exceeding safe intake levels.
Q: How does SPLENDA® Brand Sweetener (sucralose) compare to other sweeteners?
A: View answerSPLENDA® Brand Sweetener (sucralose) is unique among no-calorie sweeteners. It has a clean, sugar-like taste without the bitter aftertaste of some other no-calorie sweeteners, such as saccharin and acesulfame-K.3-5 And unlike aspartame, it holds up to heat, so it can be used in cooking and baking.5 you can substitute SPLENDA® No Calorie Sweetener, Granulated for sugar in your favorite recipes cup for cup.
SPLENDA® Brand Sweetener is found in more than 4,000 products, worldwide, that can help make it easier for your patients to reduce their added sugar intake and plan healthier meals.
Because current dietary guidelines recommend that everyone reduce excess added sugar in their daily diets, SPLENDA® Brand Sweetener is a great way to reduce sugar intake without compromising taste.
Q: What is the difference between SPLENDA® Brand Sweetener (sucralose) and stevia products?
A: View answerSucralose, the no-calorie sweetening ingredient in SPLENDA® Sweetener Products, is made with an innovative process that starts with sugar (sucrose) and selectively replaces three hydrogen-oxygen groups on the sugar molecule with three chlorine atoms. The result is a sweetener that tastes like sugar and comes in a variety of forms — including SPLENDA® No Calorie Sweetener, Granulated — which does not lose sweetness even with cooking and baking.
Q: SPLENDA® Brand Sweetener (sucralose) contains chlorine. Is that safe?
A: View answerYes. Chlorine is a natural component of table salt, and is naturally present in many foods, such as lettuce, tomatoes, mushrooms, and peanut butter. Chlorine is also part of more complex molecules naturally found in other foods such as lentils, peas, and potatoes. Chlorine is also added to most public drinking water supplies.
Chlorine is used in a process that modifies sucrose to result in the exceptionally stable no-calorie sweetener — sucralose. The chlorine atoms in sucralose prevent it from being broken down in the body for energy, thus rendering it noncaloric.
Extensive research shows that SPLENDA® Brand Sweetener (sucralose) can be used safely by everyone, and there is no cause for concern about safety due to the presence of chlorine.8
Q: Does sucralose cause headaches/migraines?
A: View answerNo. Migraines can be caused by many things including common events such as stress or changes in vasodilation. Research does not support that sucralose causes migraines or headaches. There are no adverse effects expected with sucralose use. Sucralose is not known to produce changes in the body that are associated with headaches or migraines. For example, sucralose has no known effects on vasodilation (opening of blood vessels) or blood pressure. Studies show no effect on blood glucose or insulin levels, and there are no known effects on the nervous system.
Q: Does SPLENDA® Brand Sweetener (sucralose) cause weight gain?
A: View answerNo. SPLENDA® Brand Sweetener (sucralose) does not cause weight gain. Rather, it can help decrease caloric intake when used in place of sugar. The use of no-calorie sweeteners to help decrease caloric intake, along with regular physical activity, may help with weight management.
While it has been suggested by some that no-calorie sweeteners may cause weight gain, such conclusions are frequently based on studies that were not designed to understand its actual effect on weight management. Often, they are studies of very short duration, involving only a small number of animals. This includes, for example, a recent study in male rats funded by the Sugar Association that was subsequently found to have serious design flaws and conclusions that are unreliable and unsupported by the study data. The Expert Panel that investigated this study published their findings in the journal Regulatory Toxicology and Pharmacology,7 and concluded that the results of the study in question cannot be viewed as evidence that either SPLENDA® No Calorie Sweetener or sucralose cause any adverse effects. For more information, go to: News and Latest Research.
By contrast, studies for up to three years in humans support that no-calorie sweeteners can be useful in weight management strategies.9 Additionally, rigorous, large studies in rats that received sucralose at doses equal in sweetness to over 40 pounds of sugar per day over a lifetime showed that sucralose does not cause increases in body weight.6
A 2007 study published in Pediatrics, the official journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics, demonstrated that by making two simple changes daily (using SPLENDA® Brand Sweetener as part of a program to reduce calorie intake and increasing activity levels) families can help overweight children slow their rate of weight gain.8
